The concept of life being a mirror is one of those ageless hidden gems. I’ve met people who spend their lives pronouncing the idea of life being a mirror but forget all about it when it comes to them. Why is that? I’ll tell you why, it’s hard to self-reflect and easy to blame the outside world. So, what does this say about us if we do this? It says we have forgotten who we are.
Spiritual writer, Robin Sharma summed up this idea nicely with his quote, “Your life is a mirror. Life gives us not what we want. Life gives us who we are.” Basically, our lives are nothing more than an outward picture of our belief system, our experiences, and what we think about every day. A reflection.
It's very common for us to think about our lives in terms of what we have experienced up to now. We are essentially remembering a compilation of past events that becomes our story or our movie. These storied events are witnessed as a reflection of our personalities, belief systems, egos, mental and emotional states, etc.
Basically, we are our stories playing out in the subjective movie that we identify as our reality, and we are the star of that reality. The rest of us are no more than actors in one another’s movies. That said, we don’t have to live in accordance with these auto-play movies. You know, “reruns.” We can break the cycle and become more, but to do this, we must first go back and own, release, and reinvent ourselves.
So, how do we change our story or reinvent ourselves? It starts by altering the aperture of the mirrored lens we peer through, every day. It means no longer identifying yourself as a product of your environment. This is an inside out change. It’s seeing something completely different when you look into the mirror. No longer do we see someone who is labeled or limited. Instead, we see our unlimited potential.
Part of the problem is that we are bombarded by nonstop propaganda that is intended to control, guide, and herd us. Even our devices are designed to dumb us down, so we are more easily controlled. I tell people all the time “Don’t give your power away.” That is exactly what happens when we don’t bother to do our homework and make assumptions based on some sort of twisted affiliation. Changing our reflection is no easy task, but if we intend to change, we need to get focused and act. This action will allow us to create a shift toward the results we desire.
